  • Cold Calls, 'The call centre' - An experimental theater production

The starting point for COLD CALLS was an investigation into the texts that are used in call centres to improve the efficiency (profitability) of a company or client. The sales representatives working within these establishments could be described as real-life actors, working with a script that is performed 100's of times a day and trained to come across as naturally as possible; individuals who are skilled at making us believe in their authenticity. Playing on the parallels and differences between the theatre and a call centre, we ask the question, 'What happens when we take actors and telesales representatives out of their traditional context and place them within that of the other?' How might this affect the way we perceive an actor's profession, their status, function and position with...

Scam company name: Telesecurity -- though the scammer makes a mistake and also refers to it as Telephone Security, which runs the same scam so is probably the same organisation ("shambles" might be a more appropriate word). Scammer's fake name: Mark Scammer's phone number: "We do not have the caller's number to return the call." But the phone number given during the call was 02079791888. In this comedy adventure I adopt the persona of an old lady. My aim is to exasperate a call centre scammer who is trying to steal my debit card details. Gradually, I succeed. Please read on for more information on this scam. If anyone Googles by phone number, it might also be written 0207 979 1888 or 0207 9791888. The scammer also uses the revenue-generating number 08435323337. Aim of scam: To steal the victim's money by obtaining their Visa debit card details How the scam is run: The scammer phones the victim, claiming that the victim purchased a service that will stop marketing and nuisance phone calls. The service costs £49. The scammer tells the victim that they need to "verify" their first name, last name, phone number, postcode and address/house number, and finally their Visa card number. The scammer will also mention that the call is being recorded. The only information this scammer has at the start of the call is the victim's phone number. As the scammer has never spoken to the victim before, they need the rest of the payment information before they can make a fraudulent charge to the victim's debit card. The scammer is recording the call so that they can show that the victim voluntarily gave them all that information, turning it into a "legitimate" payment. It seems a bizarre approach, to begin the call with a barefaced lie that the victim has already bought the service. But I think the scammers have chosen this approach so that they can quickly eliminate people who say they didn't buy any such service. This way, the scammers will have a higher proportion of calls to people they *can* con -- often elderly people whose memory may be failing, who can be distressed by intrusive calls, and may be more easily bullied into giving up their payment details by somebody who claims to be providing a service on their behalf. Looking at the fictional service the scammer pretends they provide, it's hogwash. Their service supposedly prevents the purchaser from receiving marketing calls... but if you do subsequently receive marketing calls, you have to phone the scammer up to let them know! The scammer claims they will then take "legal access" against the marketing company. So they are offering a fake service that prevents unwanted calls, apart from all the unwanted calls that it doesn't prevent. The cynic in me might suggest that sounds about as effective as the UK's own free Telephone Preference Service, which is poweless to stop call from overseas... Scammer's tone: Wheedling and bullying. When the victim is slow at responding, or gets flustered or confused, the scammer will repeat the same command over and over, demanding that the victim gives them the information. No legitimate company would treat a customer in this way. History: I had a previous call from George at Telephone Security less than a month ago, though my YouTube video for that is less entertaining than this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYOuw0vkZ-o Other members of the scam team at Telesecurity / Telephone Security: Ben Miller/Benjamin, David Anderson, David Jordan, Eric, George Smith (my previous caller), John Parker, Kevin, Mark Robertson (probably "my" Mark), Peter Johnson, Santiago. Consumers Today is yet another name for a company that phones you with a "questionnaire" that takes ages to answer. How long can The Major go without answering a single question posed by "Jeffrey"? Consumers Today plans to sell my details to other companies who will then make unwanted sales calls to me. While not a scam, its calls are unsolicited and unwanted, and whatever company is hiding behind this made-up name ignores the Telephone Preference Service. Cold-calling company: Consumers Today (does not appear in an Internet search, so probably a made up name) Phone number: 0008001389084 which might be written 000800 1389084 or 00 0800 1389084; this will probably change frequently as the company is blacklisted Cold-caller: "Jeffrey". What is it with J-names? The previous "Tech Helpline" callers were John Smith and Justin. It could be spelt Geoffrey, I suppose. In the call, Jeffrey rushes over the part where he has to obtain my consent for his company to use my details. This is very poor business practice. Jeffrey also makes the bizarre claim that answering marketing questions will reduce the number of cold calls I receive, because I will only be contacted by companies whose products interest me. This could only be the case if Jeffrey's company was the sole controller of cold calls in the entire world. As there are so many of these nuisance callers, scammers and other parasites who will phone me anyway, Jeffrey's assurances are totally hollow. Despite being thwarted by The Major on this occasion, the company continues to phone me but I keep missing its calls.
